Procedure for Pregnancy Detection in Sheep Using Ultrasound

Method for Pregnancy Detection in Sheep Using Ultrasound:
1. The goat’s lower abdomen and flanks around the teats are shaved, and the goat lies on its side. There is no fasting period before the transrectal or transabdominal scan.
2. An ultrasound examination is performed using a real-time ultrasound scanner equipped with a linear array 7.5 MHz transrectal scanner and a convex surface 5.0 MHz transabdominal scanner.
3. Lubricant is applied to the 7.5 MHz rectal probe, and the probe is slowly inserted into the rectum until the bladder can be identified.
4. The probe is gently moved back and forth, and rotated 90 degrees clockwise and counterclockwise.
5. For the transabdominal ultrasound examination, contact fluid (lubricant) is applied to the test side, and after removing the hair, the area is 150 đến 200 cm² above and below the right side. Then, the transducer is placed on the goat’s right side, 5.0 cm in front of the hind leg and 2.5 cm above the teat. Pregnant and non-pregnant goats are identified using real-time monitoring devices to detect fetal heart rate, spinal cord, chi, and other fetal structures.
